Elefant Traks have been producing the goods, both live and on records these past few years and it’s time to count NSW producers Hermitude in amongst it all. With their fourth album HyperParadise ready to drop next month, Hermitude clearly have it in their heads to hypnotise and send freakish vibes through their fan base and beyond.
When I was sent the album to review, I was half-asleep when I listened to it the first time round. This is relevant to mention because by the time I’d gotten to the album’s title track, about seven tracks into the record, I was forcing myself to stay awake – not out of boredom, but the way the beats had been put together thus far maintained a hypnotic quality to them that I felt myself getting more and more taken away by them.

On my second shot at listening through HyperParadise, I was able to focus more on how the record pulled all different styles of music, not necessarily restricted just to hip-hop, together to make such a unique sounding album. “Engage” is one of the best instrumental pieces I’ve heard in awhile, featuring some thumping beats and a gorgeous acoustic guitar and keys section which build up into a final thirty seconds or so of fervent strings.
Tracks including “Get In My Life” and “The Villain” head down some beastly electro-inspired paths, with the beats mixed up with this distorted and heavy vibe grabbing your attention and forcing you to take note – you can’t help but bop your head. The vocals on the latter track add an extra layer of strength and I thought about how it all would have sounded if the vocals were that of a metal vocalist. Some strong stuff there.

“Let You Go” and “Golden” offer up some nice moments of trip-hop, reminiscent of Phontaine and even Burial. These are moments where the true eclectic nature behind Hermitude really shines though, in my mind, and are two real standout tracks on the record. The duo of Elgusto and Luke Dubs approach their craft in an intelligent way and have gotten the balance between instrumental electro and bass-heavy hip-hop and soul down over their past three albums. While it isn’t hard to see why the duo are garnering so much love off the backs of their live gigs, it’s just as easy to envision the more stripped back material on HyperParadise featuring in some stylish café/lounge environment.
Yes, “Speak of the Devil” is great and deserves all the props it’s been given since its release; but the true gems of HyperParadise lie in the tracks which you wouldn’t expect to dig on the first time round. Hermitude have found a way to blend a variety of musical genres together without producing material which sounds like some haphazard attempt at experimentation.
HyperParadise showcases their way the duo have honed their specific style as of now and with a massive national tour to follow the record’s release, I know I’m excited to get out there and experience this material live with everyone else.
