Passion Pit is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist, synthmaster, and mental health advocate Michael Angelakos. If there is one thing Angelakos knows, it's how to write a damn catchy pop hook. From the infectious synth lines of Sleepyhead to the bouncy and poignant Carried Away, Passion Pit has long been established as a staple in the world of synth-pop.
However, Passion Pit is much more than pop music. Despite having some purely fun pop songs, the majority of Passion Pit’s music is more dark than anything. Angelakos is not just a master of writing a pop hook, he is a master at using these hooks to convey contrastingly dark messages in lyrics, while keeping the music catchy. Angelakos suffers from Bipolar Disorder, and the impact of that disease on his life is reflected in all of his music.
Not one to stray from being confessionary, Passion Pit’s first three albums act as a trilogy telling the story of someone struggling with mental illness (Manners), getting beaten down by it (Gossamer), and ultimately learning how to live with that mental illness (Kindred). Now, moving on from those first three, Angelakos returns to not only share his struggles with mental health, but to help others dealing with illness as well.
The Tremendous Sea of Love rollout was atypical from the start, beginning in early February of 2017 he ended his social media hiatus and started tweeting youtube links to songs on a page named “The Wishart Group.” As time went on and more details came out, it was revealed that The Wishart Group was Angelakos’ non-profit organization he was launching to promote mental health advocacy for artists, and that these songs were to be released on a new album. During this time, the Passion Pit twitter hosted Q and As with neurologists, and turned into a platform to push the #weneedscience movement, opposing Trump’s budget cuts to science departments. He began giving out the album to Twitter users who retweeted various tweets and promoted his campaign by having users DM him their emails and then sending a Google Drive to the album to fans. Months later, on July 28th, the album became available on streaming services with all profits being donated to the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at Broad Institute.
Review by /u/StonewallBurgundy
“Tremendous Sea of Love is an album for us, for me and for you.” There is no better way to introduce this album than with that quote, which Angelakos uses in a letter accompanying the album. If Trump can describe crowds at his inauguration as a tremendous sea of love, then Passion Pit can counter and bring all of us together into our own sea of love, something which this album and the accompanying rollout serves to do.
The release of the album is just as atypical as its creation--in a Reddit AMA, Angelakos states that he worked on each of these songs the night before they were made available through Twitter, meaning each song on here was truly made within a day. In addition to the motif of love, Angelakos signifies the importance of imperfections continuously on this album, and expresses that idea by releasing only the first version of each song, rather than creating and perfecting multiple versions of each track as he did for his previous albums.
Despite being made and released much differently than his previous works, the album is still very much a Passion Pit album, and we are still treated with the emotionally charged, bouncy synth-pop which has defined Passion Pit. The songs seem even more personal than anything on Kindred and have a feeling of intimacy to them--something which can be attributed to the more mellow and less refined production. The album contains a bit of all the things which make Passion Pit so great, and some new things too. In addition to the more emotional songs which have made Passion Pit’s music so special, we are also treated with some of the bouncier and funner songs that resemble “Sleepyhead” or “Carried Away”. There’s even three instrumental tracks, something which Passion Pit’s never put out before but something which fits this album perfectly.
The album opens with “Moonbeam”, one of those instrumental tracks mentioned before. The song begins with the chirping of birds before it breaks right into the blissful synths which Passion Pit fans are so similar with. It’s a short track, but it preludes the grand “Somewhere Up There” very well. “Somewhere Up There” is Passion Pit’s longest song since “I’ve Got YOur Number” off of Chunk of Change--the debut EP which one could actually draw some comparisons to when listening to Tremendous Sea Of Love. Besides being similar in length, “Somewhere Up There” feels similar to “I’ve Got Your Number” because it has this sense of intimacy, and is constructed around cluttered synths--much like “I’ve Got Your NUmber,” and other tracks off of Chunk of Change. The structures of both of these songs are also unique in their own sense--neither songs rely too heavily on choruses, “I’ve Got Your Number” is driven by its whacky and scattered instrumental, while “Somewhere Up There” doesn’t even have a chorus; though, it does have a break in the middle with a recording of a psychologist speaking, something that lends more uniqueness to this song. The song is seemingly split into two parts, part one being before this spoken word part and part two being after. The first part features vibrant and glitchy synths, and extremely raw and powerful vocals. The song peaks with a synth build up and vocal flutterings before it leads into the spoken word breakdown. After the explosiveness of the first part, part two is a bit more calm and features a relaxing instrumental before ending the song with a voicemail from Angelakos’ mother. The divisive sound of this song was intentional, and Angelakos has described it as a “panic attack in three parts,” an apt description as the song begins so cluttered and intense yet ends so smooth and calmingly. “Moonbeam” may be the first song on the album, but “Somewhere Up There” feels like the best introduction possible, as it shows us what the new Passion Pit sound will be--more controlled chaos, more personal lyrics, and more intimacy.
This feeling of intimacy lies mostly in the production, to me. The quality isn’t bad by any means, but when comparing this song and all songs on TSOL to Passion Pit’s three prior studio releases, these songs feel much less refined though far more personal. Maybe it’s because this isn’t necessarily a studio album--just as most of Chunk of Change was produced in Michael Angelakos’ college dorm room (though the songs were later remastered to be released officially), these songs were written in Angelakos’ own personal studio, once again in his own living space. These songs feel special and far more personal, in an inexplicable way that one might truly not get until they’ve listened to the album and Passion Pit’s prior releases.
Though no song feels more personal on this album than “Hey K,” a song which is openly directed towards Angelakos’ former wife, Kristina Mucci, the same person whom most of both Kindred and Gossamer are focused around. The song is both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time--it somehow manages to evoke all the emotions that all of Kindred did in one song. In one sense, the song is heartbreaking because it displays such strong levels of affection for Mucci which seem to not be gone, even after the end of a relationship. On the other side of the spectrum there is a clear feeling of empowerment which is presented. Angelakos still expresses his faith in love, describing it as “a beautiful design” and a “holy architecture.” That whole set of lyrics are some of the most beautiful ones I’ve heard from Passion Pit--”Love is the answer, the one design, such a simple design, holy architecture, love is the answer, love is the answer.” Those four lines echo the sentiments of countless love songs, of many Passion Pit songs, and of the idea of love itself. The delivery of those lines along with the built up and flourishing synths make this truly one of the most beautiful parts in any song released this year. Those lyrics seem to truly embody the message of this album, they are words to live by and words to unify is all in a belief in love for one another. I truly am not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the best songs Angelakos has ever created--from the blissfully moving instrumental, to the gorgeous vocals, to the prayer-like lyrics--Angelakos has struck emotional gold on this piece. The song speaks not only on Angelakos’ relationship with Mucci, but on the concept of love itself, and can ring true for anyone in love, in search of love, or in disdain of love. It reflects a sense of hope, a sense of persistency and trust in love, trust which Passion Pit can lend us all to a deeper understanding of.
For an album created and recorded only in Passion Pit’s home studio, there is just as much complexity of instrumentation as on his prior albums. Of all the tracks on this album the one which stands out most to me instrumentally is “Inner Dialogue,” an instrumental track which features vocal chops and poppy synths which build into beautiful layers. There are lush synths throughout the whole album, but there are also some tracks which sound nothing like the typical Passion Pit song. For example, “You Have The Right” features a gorgeous, soft guitar driven instrumental, while the song lacks the signature Passion Pit synth-textures. Additionally, the album’s final track, “For Sondra,” begins with a light piano before building into synths and ultimately ending with just Angelakos and a guitar. Passion Pit explores new sounds on this album and by ditching the signature dancy beats at times, more intimate and emotional songs are created.
If there is one track which can be looked at as the usual dancey Passion Pit, it would be “I’m Perfect.” This song starts off with punching drums and a fun beat, and has some of the strongest vocals on the album. The chorus is simple, catchy but enjoyable and the song feels like it could fit right in with Kindred. It's definitely an enjoyable track and is its own fun, but it does not reflect this new Passion Pit sound we are treated to on the rest of the album.
Tremendous Sea of Love is the new Passion Pit sound, it is everything Passion Pit now stands for--imperfectionism, unity, intimacy, and most importantly, love. Though restricted to a simple home studio Angelakos takes some of his biggest steps outside his usual production comfort zone and treats us with the most personal and least refined production he has done since Chunk of Change, in the best way possible. Lyrically, the album as a whole is as confessionary as any other Passion Pit album yet feels even more personal, and contains some of his best lines. If Kindred told the story of someone learning to live with a mental illness, Tremendous Sea of Love tells the story of someone who has learned how to live and who is grateful for his life. The album inspires hope that we can all learn how to live with whatever we must struggle with as long as we have the help of others. Just as we need others, Angelakos needs us and this album is his way of expressing that.
“You're tremendous, you are truly the reason I have, have always, and could continue to have anything...I really, truly love you.”
Favorite Lyrics by /u/StonewallBurgundy
“So, now I cry -- I’m only trying to turn our hell to reality
And it’s so divine
Because the pain
And the time it takes to end all of the talking
And finally meet on a plane
And up there somewhere”
Somewhere Up There
“You have the right to look away
And take a night or take a day
And time after time it comes to you
How could you barely even choose?
You'll never win and you will not lose
And time after time I will trust you”
You Have The Right
“Oh, take me away from all this foolish grief, baby
Wake me once you know our home and that's where we'll stay”
The Undertow
“You're moving slower than you mean to, but it's over at last
You cry because you missed it, it went by too fast
'The whole world's against you,' you say, then you ask
Where all your friends have gone to”
I’m Perfect
“Love is the answer and the one design
Such a simple design, holy architecture
Love is the answer
Love is the answer”
